Resignations of Kurdish Officials may "lead to Disaster"

Kurdishaspect.com - By Kim Hardi

According to reports published on Awene’s website, several high ranking officials in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan resigned Saturday.  Khosrat Rasul, along with Omar Sayid Ali, Jalal Jawhar, Osman Haji Mahmud and Mustafa Sayid Qadir, all resigned from PUK, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's political party.

Questions over how to handle Nawshirwan Mustafa, the co-founder and former deputy secretary of PUK that left the party to start his own news organization (Wisha), appeared to be among the issues that triggered resignations.

Some media organizations have been reporting that Nawshirwan Mustafa is planning on running in the upcoming election with an independent list.

Salar Aziz, member of the management board of Wisha Company that is close to Nawshirwan Mustafa, recently confirmed those reports when he told Rudaw “that they have made a decision to create the list and said that they are trying to invite more politicians to join their list like Jawhar Namiq Salim” . Mustafa himself has not commented on this subject.

Some PUK members fear the decision by Mustafa to participate in the upcoming election, if true, would lead to weakening the Party's strong hold as the second in power to KDP in the Kurdish region.

An official close to the situation, that did not want to be recognized, told Kurdish Aspect “the situation is serious", adding "if Talabani does not address the issues that have loomed over PUK in the last few years in particular the government corruption, it will lead to disaster for PUK and more resignations of high political officials in the party.

President Talabani is scheduled to leave Baghdad for Sulaimaniyah to conduct a debate with the five members.
