Peace and Progress in Memory of Halabja

What differentiates humans from other creatures is the mind, an important function of the brain. Feeling, thinking and behavior are the products of the mind. The exact relation between brain and mind is more complex, less tangible, and can not be explained in this essay. What is tangible is that human brain is more developed compare to other creatures.

Also compare to other creatures the frontal forebrain is much more developed and responsible for regulating our actions. Learning and training contributes to the fine-tuning of the brains and civilization of the minds.

Considering the lesson form civilization, humans with intact brains are not expected to use violence to satisfy their needs. However, violent behavior is not unusual for less developed minds. Of course environmental influences and brain-washing could make a non violent individual behave wildly.  However, without predisposition for violence it is unlikely that humans disregard other people’s dignity, treats them as slaves, burn them in gas chambers, throw chemical and other bombs on them, and kill and bury them in masses. The crimes of slavery, Holocaust, and Halabja are unimaginable to be the acts of humans, unless the offenders had lost their mind and regressed to a less devolved level.

How human aggression started or who started it first is a philosophical question. What is relevant is that wild and violent creatures might lose the capacity to understand the consequences of their behavior on others and how they might be treated in return. As an example the US angry reaction to Taliban and Saddam might have been a response to the tragedies of 911 and Halabja. Those who have not experienced or at least read about the slavery, the holocaust and the Anfal, and ethnic and gender discrimination might not understand why some people were not disappointed for Saddam and the Taliban to be overthrown. They and their alike should have been overthrown and imprisoned for life a long time ago.

Although dictators might be criminals, the international companies and the UN are not innocent for closing their eyes on the behavior of some of the tyrannical states. The United Nations had made progress but been unable to guarantee the rights of many people without a state. By lack of proper action, the international body has ignored the basic principles of our civilization and so some people have reacted with revenge and aggression such as attacking the Halabaj’s monument in March 2006. Since these attackers were targeting a symbolic building and not human lives, they can not be classified as underdeveloped creatures but as angry and impatient humans.

I believe patience accompanied by determination for freedom, peace, and equality pay off ultimately. The patience and persistence of the Holocaust survivors accompanied by the support of Israel and its allies finally forced Germany to compensate the families of the victims. The endurance and determination of the blacks accompanied by the support of civilized whites finally made the dominant culture recognize a black is as capable as a white to compete for the highest office in the world.

One might argue the people of Halabja are familiar with Yaresan, Zardasht, and Sophism and should be as patient as their ancestors and wait much longer than 20 years. However, Halabja was only the tip of the iceberg. Halabja and other cities and villages that have been inhabited by the people with the same background have been waiting for many centuries. An Irish friend once mentioned her people waited only for 900 years and maybe your people have to wait a little longer. I hope these ancient people do not have to wait any longer and obtain what they deserve, the same cultural, linguistic, and national rights as their neighbors in the Middle East and the same liberation as other free nations in the world. At the same time I hope they see the true liberation in promoting peace and progress instead of revenge and regression.
