Talabani and Barzani discuss the upcoming election in Kurdistan

Today following a meeting between both PUK and KDP politburos in Pirmam (Sary Rush) Iraqi President Talabani and KRG President Massoud Barzani reiterated their commitment to the strategic treaty between the two parties that states both PUK and KDP will participate in the parliamentary election as one list.
The parliamentary election was originally set to be held by May 19, 2009 in Kurdistan region but many feel that KGR is not ready for the upcoming election. President Barzani said “we are prepared to have an election but it is up to the electoral commission to set a date”.
With regards to the issue of PKK and Turkey President Barzani said: “we are against using force in resolving the issues but rather support peaceful democratic solution through dialogue and understanding in this way we are committed in participating to solve the Kurdish issue in Turkey.
With regards to article 140 Talabani said “article 140 is a constitutional matter and no one can change that.” Adding, “I, as the president of Iraq, have sworn that I shall protect the constitution”.
