SNL needs to apologize

Kurdishaspect.com - Prepared by Art-in-Mind

Flawless humans do not exist, even in “the brave new world”. We eat, drink, and absorb information. We can not keep every intake in our body or mind and have to excrete what is useless for our growth. We know about the repulsive nature of our bodily excretion and forget that our mind might also have insulting exertion in the form of behavioral flaws.

In the old world people used to turn to their clergies to confess about their personal flaws. In the modern world they turn to their consultants, advisors, and therapists to do the same. Their purpose is ultimately learning from mishaps, mistakes, failures, and flaws to lead a better life as an individual and as a member of the society.

Many leaders such as the clergies of the old and the politicians of the modern world might perceive themselves as representatives of god and convince their constituents as such. People expect them to be flawless and forget that they are humans too. They themselves know quite well that they are as weak as any other human beings. If they are not too embarrassed about their flaws, they might turn to comedians to disclose their shortcomings.

Comedy is among the most effective ways to make the public aware about the flaws of the public figures. In political comedies the flaws of policy makers are heightened and exaggerated so they become humorous and tangible for the public.

On Saturday April 12, Saturday Night Live (SNL), a remarkable cultural and political comedy show highlighted the flaws of the political and military leaders in the US and the ethnic and sectarian groups in the Middle East . Among those ethnic groups there is one that has been marginalized and ignored by the world establishments. I was pleased to hear this ethnic group has come to existence even in SNL. However, I was disappointed to hear that it was portrayed as a group that has stolen oil instead of being a gullible group who falls for empty promises over and over. This group’s resources have been stolen for decades and now they are trying to have a share of it for themselves. Since fairness is universal, I don’t have to give you which group was insult most.

Although we all need the joy of comedy to share our frustration with mishaps, I think SNL has to apologize to the ethnic group that was most insulted on April 12, 2008. If SNL is not familiar how to apologize, Mel Gibson and Michael Richards can give them some advise what they did when they humiliated two great and patriotic American minorities. These actors simply acknowledged that they were uninformed, biased, and judgmental and so apologized to the people they had insulted.

If you saw SNL on April 12, 2008, please write a comment here or send us an email (admin@art-in-mind.net) about how this notable American comedy show should apologize to the ethnic group that was portrayed as one that has stolen the oil.
