The prime minister of the autonomous Kurdish government in northern Iraq has called for Turkey and Iran to stop bombing the region.
Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani Tuesday wrote in the Wall Street Journal that Turkey and Iran must cease bombing northern Iraq as part of their fight against the outlawed Kurdistan Worker's Party, or PKK, and the movement's breakaway PEJAK faction, Hurriyet reported.
We think it is imperative that Middle Eastern states send their diplomatic representatives to Iraq, and for these states to proactively prevent terrorists from slipping across their borders. Unprovoked and recurring bombardment of the northern Iraq by Turkey and Iran must stop, he wrote.
Al-Sumaria reported Tuesday that a Turkish border guards official confirmed that the Nirwa and Rican regions of northern Iraq were subject to air and rocket attacks.
Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Regional Government has asked the United Nations to help stop Iran from bombing border villages.
