Two U.S. lawmakers formally created a Kurdish caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, aimed at building American-Iraqi Kurdish ties and friendship.
Lincoln Davis, a Tennessee Democrat, and Joe Wilson, a South Carolina Republican - became co-chairmen of the caucus, which presently has no other members. Late last year, there were reports of a broader effort to build a Kurdish Congressional Caucus in Congress, which Qubad Talabani, head of the KRG U.S. Representation Office, was helping to lead. This year, efforts appear to have succeeded.
During a reception that several other members of Congress attended marking the creation of the caucus, Congressman Davis and Congressman Wilson urged other lawmakers to join the group. Also present was Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Federal Region in Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, who declared the reception a "historical day".
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) headed by Nechirvan Barzani has been the most reliable American ally in the U.S. war in Iraq.
