The Right Policy towards the PKK

Kurdidishaspect.com - By Dr. Showan Khurshid

The Article by Ako Saeed is both informative, in regard to the past relationship between Masud Barzani with the Turkish government and it is also to the point that the PKK leaders should not be handed over to Turkey. However, I dispute strongly the assertion that the PKK is legitimate liberation organisation. The PKK has obviously been able, through terrorism and various underhand methods, to manipulate the Kurdish public, but that does not give it legitimacy.

Morally, a political organisation that is using violence in response to expressing moral matters (statements and discourses regarding the proper relationship and interaction between individuals and groups) is terroristic. That is why I regard both the state of Turkey and the PKK as terrorist political entities. However, the Kurdish government should not allow PKK to operate in South Kurdistan under any circumstances.

Even the utility record of PKK has been deplorable. It has assassinated tens of Kurdish intellectuals. PKK has damaged the Kurdish cause more than the Turkish establishment did and can do. It is the PKK’s policies that resulted in the submission of Kurdish population to Turkey’s humiliating policies. Despite the existence of more than 15 million Kurds, Turkish officials can make statements implying outmost disregard to Kurds as ethnicity and people, who should have equal rights to others, while in the meantime express its commitment to the rights of Turkmen as though only Turkish people deserve human rights. Without PKK the Turkish fascism would never be able to cast this unfavourable light on Kurdish issues.

Accordingly, I should ask intellectual Kurds to transcend narrow minded nationalism. Trying to defend and embrace the PKK just to spite Turkey will be more harmful than useful.
