Kurdish National Congress of North America (KNCNA) has been a leading force in promoting Kurdish cause in North America for the past 22 years. As indicated on its website www.kncna.org, KNCNA has the following mission:
“The Kurdish National Congress of North America (KNC) is a non-profit, member-driven organization representing Kurds from all parts of Kurdistan living in the United States and Canada . The KNC was founded in 1988, soon after Iraqi chemical weapons attacks on Halabja and other Kurdish cities and villages. Its objective is to unite Kurds living in North America to work for common goals, to promote the idea of a United Free Kurdistan, and to strengthen the voice of all Kurds living in the USA and Canad . The KNC is a democratic organization. Its president and board of directors are elected by the members and the organization is governed by a set of by-laws. The KNC encourages open discussion of issues, free speech, and active participation in leadership by its members.”
Through the efforts and contribution of its members, boards, and presidents within the past 22 years, KNCNA as a pluralistic, democratic, and secular organization, has informed the North American public and policy makers why the Kurdish people deserve to live in peace and have the same human rights as any other free nation.
Knowing the Kurdish traumatic history, it is not easy to be a Kurd and promote the Kurdish dream, a free and united Kurdistan. However, many people have done it and are doing just that. For the past years we have had the pleasure of working closely with many dedicated KNCNA members including but not limited to its presidents such as Dr. Asad Khailani, Dr. Hikmat Fikrat, Dr. Fouad Darweesh, Dr. Najmadin Karim, Dr. Saman Shali, and Dr. Kirmanj Gundi. They all have been inspirational to many Kurds in North America to dedicate part of their life to the cause of our people via writings, presentations, and educating themselves and others.
We all have our own views and approaches in how to help each other and our people to fulfill their dream. Despite our differences, we all agree that our people deserve to live in peace and have their linguistic and cultural rights. We believe only through statehood these rights could be secured. We ask all Kurds and friends of Kurds who believe in the same concept to join us and become a KNCNA member so together we can promote this noble cause. If you believe that other options within the current states that control Kurdistan is possible, we still invite you to join us at KNCNA and convince us why your approach might be a better option.
KNCNA holds a major conference yearly and an election for the board and presidency of the organization every other year. This year’s conference and election will be held on June 4-6, 2010 at San Diego State University. Please join us for this very important conference and participate in its election process. Info about the conference and a related banquet can be found at: www.kncna.org
