At last after 85 days the cabinet of Kurdistan Region Government meets!

Kurdishaspect.com - Translated by Dr Kamal Mirawdeli

(Awene, Sulaymaniyah, independent weekly newspaper in standard Kurdish, 12 June 2008)

After failing to hold a single meeting for 85 days, the cabinet of Kurdistan Region Government (KRG met on 6 June 2008. In the meeting the visits of Kurdistan Region PM [Nechirvan Barzani] and his Deputy, the relationship between Parliament and Government, and the issues of electricity and housing were discussed. The Spokesperson for the government Jamal Abdullah says ‘It is impossible to build the flats decided by Parliament [in the Housing Act]. The government has its own projects to deal with the problem of housing.”

Delays in cabinet meetings

About the failure of the cabinet to meet for 85 days, the Spokesperson of KRG Jamal Abdullah says: “There are situations that are beyond our control that delay holding of meetings. Sometimes sudden matters come up such as the travel of KRG PM to the US and the travel of Deputy PM to Croatia. These were the reasons for delays. Although the results of such meetings might lead to holding new meetings [?] such as the visits of the PM and Deputy PM. In his visits PM met President George Bush, the Republican President Candidate John McCain and several important figures in the US.”

The importance of PM’s meetings with the US President

According to available media reports in the meeting between George Bush and KRG PM, the latter was told that the Kurds should not  create problems for passing the Oil Law [in Iraqi Parliament], but the Spokesperson of KRG denies this. He says there are changes in the American view of the powers of the central government and they have conceded some rights to KRG [for the production of oil]. He added: “In this respect KRG would declare some initiatives soon to allow the Oil Law to pass in an earlier date.”

The visit to Emirates and failure to take Minister of Tourism with him

During PM’s [recent] visit to the Emirates he signed a 4 billion-dollar contract with the companies of that country to build a grand tourist project between Arbil and Salahaddin to be finished in few years. KRG will contribute part of the capital. On why Arbil was chosen for this project and nowhere else in Kurdistan, the Spokesperson of KRG said that in the meeting the PM has said that after this project is finished in Arbil similar projects will be carried out in Sulaymaniyah and other areas.

About the failure of PM to take his Tourism Minister with him to the Emirates, the Spokesperson Jamal Abdullah said: “The Minister has expressed such observation in the cabinet meeting. He is right to express this. But the project is an investment project and the Investment Agency has been working on it for nine months to finalise this contract. It was their business.”
