Considering the developments in the last two decades in Turkey vis-à-vis the Kurdish issue, and the wise policies of the Democratic Society Party (DTP) to find a political solution to resolve the Kurdish issue peacefully, we urge you to encourage Turkish authorities to employ a more pragmatic policy to end the cycle of hate and fear in regard to the Kurds who live under Turkish rule and acknowledge the reality in which Turkey lives – that Turkey is a multi-ethnic society.
We understand that Turkey plays a vital role in the Middle East in terms of protecting American interests. We also know that it is a prominent member of NATO. But that does not change the fact that they are oppressing more than 20 million Kurds.
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the “Good Kurds-Bad Kurds” policy adopted by the U.S. has been used as a pretext by the Turks to suppress this ancient Biblical people. Good-Kurds are those in Kurdistan-Iraq, who have been good friends to Americans, and the Bad-Kurds are those in Kurdistan-Turkey; they are labeled “bad” because they have been fighting their suppression by the Turkish government which, as noted before, is a close ally of the U.S. in the Middle East. Kurds in all parts of Kurdistan share the same history, culture, language and tradition, and struggle for freedom to live in peace like all the peace-loving nations in the world. To artificially divide them, declaring one group on one side of an arbitrary border as “good” and the other group, fighting for the same rights, as “bad” is inconsistent with American values.
We ask you to get involved and try to end this policy which could be interpreted as a Faustian bargain against a very loyal people in the Middle East. The Kurds are a largely secular Muslim society with a liberal tradition anchored in our derivation in Indo-European history. Although divided by colonial powers geographically and geopolitically among Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey, and regardless of occasionally being suppressed by American support to these respective governments, the Kurds have always been able to maintain respect for western democratic culture and ideas, particularly those of American idealism.
We implore you to encourage Turkish authorities that it is in the best interest of Turkey in order to have a more prosperous future as an accepted and respected member of the European Union to work with the DTP’s leadership, and find a peaceful political solution to the Kurdish issue in Turkey.
Sincerely,
