The prominent Kurdish writer and thinker Rebin Hardi said in the opening of the ceremony to protest the murder of the young journalist Soran Mama Hama that both Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) must be seen" as the enemies of freedom until they carry out a thorough investigation of the death of Soran Mama Hama and bring the murderers to justice."

On the evening of 27 July 2008 the Lvin magazine organised a mourning ceremony at the Nali Park in Sulaymnaiya to protest the murder of the journalist and support the case for urgent investigation and discovering the murderers. The meeting also condemned the ongoing threat against journalists.

In the event, the editor of Lvin magazine Ahmad Mira criticised Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for failing to condemn the murder or take any action to investigate the crime. He said " The murder of Soran Mama Hama moved the  world and made the US government formally condemn it and ask for investigation, but the KRG has so far neither condemned the crime nor initiated an investigation." Mira also criticised the police in Kirkuk for failing to investigate the case.

Then the editor of Rozhnama read the official speech of the ceremony and asked on behalf of all the private sector newspapers and institutions not to ignore a thorough investigation of this crime. He also said: "Those people who had a big hand in internal fighting and had dedicated their pens to enflame it, have now come together in a front calling against the private sector press and give fatwa for the closing down of the independent newspapers. These people must be exposed and condemned".

Then the writer and intellectual Rebin Hardi condemned the murder describing the murderers as cowards and asked that ôuntil the murderers are brought to justice, both KDP and PUK must be considered as perpetrators of this crime." He said: "They must be seen as two forces that are enemies of freedom until they investigate the crime and discover the criminals."

Then Havel Abubekir gave a speech and criticised the Kurdish parties holding them responsible for the murder of Soran Hama because they are responsible for the security of the city.

The representative of Kirkuk branch of the syndicate of Kurdistan journalists Shwan Dawidi made a statement stressing that the assassination of Soran Mama Hama is a frightening start. He said:" We must realise that there are still some people who believe in the physical elimination and worse they have chosen Kirkuk to exercise this crime."

Shwan Dawudi explained that their syndicate has asked the Baghdad government to launch an investigation because they believe that KRG would not do any investigation.
