Shock to the System

Today Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) began announcing the results of Kurdistan’s Parliamentary and Presidential elections.

The final results are as follows:

The “Kurdistani List” won 57.34% of the votes
“Goran List”, the change movement, won 23.75% of the votes.
The “Service and Reform List” received 12.8% of the votes and the Islamic movement of Kurdistan received 1.45% of the votes.

Masood Barzani was re-elected president of the Kurdistan region with 69.7%  while Dr. Kamal Mirawdali had a strong showing with 25.32% of the vote.
Dr. Halo Ibrahim 3.49%
Safeen Haji 1.4%
Husain Garminy .59%

The stronger than expected results in the election by (Goran) the Change list has shocked both ruling parties. This has prompted Talabani to promise that there will be changes in his party's program and added: "Surely there will be changes within the leadership."

Meanwhile there have been reports of wide spread voting fraud committed by the two ruling parties. These allegations have created a tense political atmosphere in the once peaceful part of Iraq’s region.

Both Goran (Change) and Service Reform lists have filed a complaint with (IHEC) and vowed not to accept the election violations by the Kurdistani List.  An official from Iraq's national election commission told Reuters that there have been eight serious complaints, but they were unlikely to affect the overall election results.

It appears that the IHEC is purposely avoiding investigating the allegations.
