The New Kurdistan Parliament

Yesterday, Massoud Barzani took the legal oath as the president of the Kurdistan Regional Government and Kamal Karkuki from the Kurdistani list was elected as the speaker of the Kurdish Parliament.
The ceremony took place on the morning of August 21, 2009 it was attended by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and representatives from: the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Russia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Germany, Italy, the Republic of Korea, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Last week, Dr. Burham Saleh, resigned from his position as Iraq’s deputy Prime Minster due to his nomination for Kurdistan’s premiership. Dr. Burham is the new Kurdistan Regional Government’s Prime Minster replacing Nechirvan Barzani.
A source close to PUK and KDP has told Awene, the independent Kurdish Newspaper, that President Barzani will have two vice presidents one will be Nechirvan Barzani, the nephew of Massoud Barzani, the other will be Kossrat Rassul a representative of PUK.
The elections for the semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region were held on July 25, 2009 with the Kurdistani List winning the majority obtaining 59 seats in the Parliament and the Goran List came in second with 25 seats.
