Kamal Mirawdeli calls upon opposition MPs to suspend their membership and stop all contacts with current political power
Awene newspaper, 27 August 2009
The former presidential candidate and
‘elected president of Kurdistan region for
Garmiyan and Sulaymaniyah areas’ Dr
Kamal Mirawdeli has asked MPs of Change
(Gorran) and Reform lists [in Kurdistan
parliament] to suspend their membership in
protest against the continuation of the
campaign of sacking and stopping the
livelihood of those who have not voted for the
political power.
Sulaymaniyah- Awene, 27-08-09: In a statement published by the presidential bureau of Dr Kamal Mirawdeli a copy of which has been sent to Awene, it is stated that “Dr Kamal Mirawdeli asks the opposition MPs in Kurdistan parliament to immediately suspend their membership and refuse to have any meetings with Kurdish authorities until the campaign of sacking and stopping the livelihood of people which has created a big risk of the explosion of violence and civil conflict, stops and those who have been sacked are redressed. In another part of the appeal the MPs are asked to “prevent another civil war and defend the most basic right of their people.” It adds: “After the election not only has the campaign of sacking people not stopped and justice has not been restored for those who have been sacked, it has become more brutal. I have had communications from tens of army and security officers who have been PUK members and had no relation with Gorran but have been sacked because they have voted for me. Tens more who have voted for Gorran and have been sacked have asked me for help to support their children. But the issue here is not the number of people whose livelihood has been stopped. The very use of this brutal mechanism against citizens who have used their democratic rights to vote according to their will and conscience is an insult to humans and all religious, human and democratic values. On the other hand, accepting this action means that you accept the fascist principle that the family power of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) own the lands, the skies, the budget, the wealth, the businesses and bazaars of this country and they are entitled to treat the Kurdish citizens as serfs and punish those who do not obey them if not by murder and imprisonment then by sacking them and making the unemployable. The cruelty and injustice of this situation on the one hand, and the helplessness and lack of legal defence by those who are sacked on the other, have reached a stage that has created a big risk of violent explosion and civil conflict. Hundreds of people cannot afford to accept this situation anymore.”
The appeal ends by writing: “it is obvious that democracy and parliamentary system do not accord with this fascist practice and it is not possible to deal with this situation through bureaucracy and the maneuvers of the political power. Therefore the most correct and legitimate action is to deliver your religious, patriotic, ethical and democratic duties and to immediately without delay and hesitation suspend your membership and stop all your activities and contacts in parliament and continue to do so until this policy of stopping people’s livelihood is stopped, people are compensated and the perpetrators of these actions are punished.”
It should be noted that Dr. Kamal Mirawdeli was the strongest rival of the incumbent president of the region and was the second winner in the elections. But he believes that ‘a lot of fraud has been used against him in the presidential elections especially in Arbil and Duhok.” Therefore he considers himself the elected president of the areas of Garmiyan and Sulaymaniyah where he has won against the incumbent president and publishes his statements in this capacity.
