Hearing session of 8,000 disappeared members of Barzani clan proceeds in Iraqi Supreme Court

Kurdishaspect.com - By Baqi Barzani

In 1983, When Kurds in Southern Kurdistan {Iraq} were resisting Saddam’s demolition and occupation schemes, Iraqi military launched a merciless offensive on various Kurdish villages in Kurdistan, rounding up 8,000 male members of a clan named “Barzanis”.

Never to be seen and never be heard from again for 20 elongated years. Their families remained in anticipation till 2007; when a team led by Dr. MOHAMMED IHSAN, Kurdish Human Rights Minister, with their persistent efforts, could finally come back with a persuasive answer. The remains of some 512 of them could be located and unearthed in mass graves in distant deserts situated in South of Iraq. The bodies of some of the victims were brought back to Kurdistan, and eventually laid to rest in a particular ceremony.  Families of the victims were appeased by the erupting news and the enigma was partially unraveled.  .

Throughout Kurdish history, Barzani families have suffered a great deal and endured the worst. They have offered a lot sacrifices for the sake of their strong belief in espousing Kurdish cause and their full devotion to their homeland. However, very sadly, the overall living plight of Barzani families in Kurdistan has radically exasperated.

The dictator regime of Saddam Hussain more than ever targeted members of the Barzani clan for their deep involvement in national politics. Barza and its surrounding villages, where most of its clan constituents dwell, was wiped out on almost every occasion.

This is a scant part of a broader genocidal campaign carried out by Saddam’s well-equipped and well-built army in an attempt to eradicate the ethnic and national identity of a nation. Genocides and ethnic-cleansings committed during “Anfal and Halbja” across Kurdistan are incomparable in the history of mankind.

Culprits involved in the disappearance of 8,000 Barzani clan members are being litigated in the Iraqi Supreme Court today on Oct 05, 2010. The trial has been proceeding for quite some times pending a final verdict.  Kurdish TV stations (Kurd SAT and Kurd TV) have already resumed broadcasting the hearing session live.

With the trial still in full swing, all viable legal means should be pursued to seek fiscal recompense from Baghdad for the families of victims in order to alleviate part of their agonies and afflictions, and further improve their living standards in Kurdistan.

This is sad reminiscent of a tiny fraction of preceding injustices against the Kurds in Iraq, but a strong omen of optimism for the families of victims perceiving that finally justice is being done. This is the moments the victimized families have been tarrying for years.
