Mensur Barzani on Turkey's Most Wanted List
Kurdishaspect.com – By Ahmet Safak
Recently, the Iraqi News Agency reported that there are 36 people on Turkey's list of most wanted people in Iraq. Among those 36 is Mensur Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan region's son.
Mensur Barzani is also head of the KDP intelligence service. Turkey is calling for his immediate arrest and has sent a list including his name and 100 other people to the Iraqi Government. It is unlikely that the Iraqi Government will hand any people over and it is also unknown how Turkey wishes for the arrests without Iraqi cooperation.
However, some say that in a possible war between Turkey and the Kurdistan region, arrests of over one-hundred of Turkey's wanted individuals will be pursued, and over thirty of those wanted people are individuals working for the Kurdistan Regional Government.
The Turkish parliament recently approved a military operation into Iraqi Kurdistan. However, there is no set timetable or public plans as to if and when the military will invade. Iraqi Kurds have vowed to resist an invasion, and say that Kurdish rebels are merely Turkey's excuse for invading. They say that Turkey's real ambitions are to destroy Kurdish achievements in Iraq. Iraqi politicians in Baghdad have said that such an incursion would be a violation of international law, and international bodies, including the United States, have warned Turkey against such an invasion saying it would lead to a catastrophe in the region.
