US should not turn a blind eye to human rights violations in Turkey

Kurdishaspect.com - By Baqi Barzani

Human rights violations are on the rise in Turkey. Kurdish political activists, human rights advocates and independent journalists are incarcerated on a daily basis.  Turkish government exploits every judicial, legislative and executive muscles and means in a futile attempt to deflect the Kurdish long-term predicament and stifle the democracy, freedom-seeking voices in that country.

United States, the professed champion of human rights, has not only turn a blind eye to Turkish continued breeches and repression of Kurdish masses, but also confirmed its commitment to aid Turkey in subduing Kurdish political struggle. It has stepped up its military cooperation and approved of Turkish ethnic-cleansing campaigns against the subjugated Kurds. This is indicative of US double-standard policies and reflection of US self-centeredness versus rising up for the rights of oppressed and truly practicing what it preaches.

Speaking to al-Turkiye, the Arabic-language channel of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, or TRT, in lieu of buoying up and propounding Kurdish question with Turkish officials, president Talabani negated our nation’s right to independence merely to gain more popularity among Iraqi adjoining countries and guarantee his re-nomination to the presidential post. Talabani takes pride in appearing in hurriyetdailynews front page and rejoices affronting the fundamental rights of his own nation, while overlooking the fact that it was the power of the overwhelming majority of his own masses, who could secure him a prestigious position, not the pernicious role of neighboring hostile regimes.

Talabani also fails to appreciate the true implication and significance of implementing article 140 of Iraqi constitution. Kurdistan will not necessitate depending on foreign export and import if it incorporates Kirkuk and disputed areas back into KRG. Regaining Kirkuk equates our automatic protection and independence. The world powers will be more than willing to back Kurds up for the sake of oil if not Kurdish rights.

Kurdish Regional Government needs to reassess its ties with Ankara and sets strict conditions on US continued presence in Kurdistan if Washington does not cease reinforcing Turkey against Kurds in Northern Kurdistan.
