Expulsion of Abed Mohamad Atto suspended

Kurdishaspect.com - By Hassan Shahanov

The 28-year-old Syrian Kurd who after the Danish authorities' original plan was to be deported in the morning to Syria is still not executed. It seems like the Asylret Legal urgent request to the Ministry of Integration, Refugee Board and the Immigration Service to stop the deportation has had an impact.

Abed Mohamad Atto is a political active Kurd and will, as a direct result of his political commitment, be extremely vulnerable in the event of his deportation to Syria. Asylret have, among other things pointed out  to the  Danish authorities, our considerations  and concern in the event of an expulsion to Syria where Atto will face immediate imprisonment included torture and will most likely  be convicted by a military tribunal according  paragraphs of law, § 267, § 278, § 287 and § 288 of the Syrian Penal Code. The young man therefore risks life imprisonment.

"Asylret greet the Danish authorities act welcome which was based on information they received about Atto Mohamad’s case and the miserable conditions for Kurds in Syria. We think it is deeply repugnant and highly reprehensible that Atto has now been incarcerated for two weeks in Denmark - and remain imprisoned. As it is generally accepted solitary confinement is also known as a form of torture "says Said Parvin from Asylret.

As previously announced, Mohamad Atto was one of the hungers striking Syrian Kurds at Christiansborg Castle Square in front of the Danish parliament. The Syrian authorities responded to the hunger strike in Denmark and as a direct consequence of it, all the relatives of the hunger striking young men were visited and threatened including Atto`s family. This shows how vigilant the Syrian authorities are.

Politically active Syrian Kurds are a very vulnerable group, where daily harassment and arrests are a every day events, and in many cases disappearances without any traces as a result. A method which over time has been used by many regimes in the region, in an attempt to get rid of unwanted political activist. Denmark therefore cannot deport people to certain imprisonment, torture and disappearances.

The Danish Integration Minister cannot excuse herself by saying that she, as a Danish Minister is not liable in relation of atrocities taking place in Syria, which is attested in the minister`s recent answer, in a response to the Danish parliament integration committee.

Asylret maintain that the Danish Minister of Integration has a ministerial as well as a personal responsibility, if the minister allows forced expulsions of proven politically active Kurds to Syria.

Let us hope with the fact that Abed Mohamad Atto´s deportation plan change and cancellation, can testify that the Danish authorities are about to come to their senses regarding expulsions of exposed Kurds to Syria.
