The Islamic Republic’s Successful International PR-Trick

Kurdishaspect.com - By Loghman H. Ahmedi

Different western political analysts and politicians seem to think that there is a division inside the Islamic Republic of Iran. They argue that there are different factions inside the regime, which they label as “reformists”, “pragmatists” and “conservatives”, and that it would be much easier to have diplomatic relations with the regime if either the “reformists” or the “pragmatists” hold power.

According to these arguments, the current government lead by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is part of the “fundamentalist” faction of the Iranian regime, and that this is one of the main reasons why it is so hard to persuade the regime to end its quest to obtain nuclear weapons.

The fact of the matter is that – though there are power struggles between different elements within the Islamic Republic of Iran – what unifies all these factions is Shi’a fundamentalism and their belief that the twelfth and “Hidden Imam” will return before the final judgment, preceded by chaos, war and bloodshed. The leadership of the Iranian regime has at several occasions hinted that the Hidden Imam makes political decisions for them and that the judgment day is approaching.

The idea of there being different factions inside the regime is itself a successful international relations PR-trick by the Iranian regime. The aim of the regime is to create confusion in order to divide the West. And it is obvious that this policy has worked, different governments in the West are holding back on putting sanctions on the regime and they continue to ignore human rights violations because they think that this current regime will be replaced with a “reformist” or “pragmatist” regime that will have a different approach towards the West.

As the name reveals, Iran is a theocracy based on Shi’a Islam. The political structure is constituted by several unelected and “elected” bodies in an interlinked system of government. But the real political power lies at hands of the Supreme Leader, currently Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The institutional structure of contemporary Iran and the “elections” are noting but the domestic equivalent of the above mentioned international PR-trick.

The supreme leader appoints the head of the judiciary, six of the members of the powerful Guardian Council, the commanders of all the armed forces, Friday prayer leaders, and the head of radio and television. He also confirms the election of the president. As a result, he controls all bodies of the Islamic Republic. Thus, Iran has an Ayatollah who is a de facto dictator.

However, the fact of the matter is that the regime has successfully used its “lobbyists” at different universities, government institutions, interest groups and think tanks in the West as part of its policy to mislead Western governments in order by time for its strategic objective, namely to acquire nuclear weapons.
If the regime acquires nuclear power, not only will the West face constant security problems, but the different nations in Iran (seven of them in total) will never be able to bring about regime change.

It is in the world’s interest, and particularly in West’s interest, to realize that the Islamic regime in Iran is monolithic and ideologically motivated regime intent to acquire nuclear weapons with the ultimate aim of reaching hegemony and spreading Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism worldwide. The fact that Iran for since 1979 has sponsored terrorism and has been engaged in terrorism and assassinated Kurdish leaders on European soil, are proof of its true and unchangeable nature.

It is high time for the International Community to realize that the only solution to the problems emanating from and caused by Iran at regional and international levels, is regime change.
