An Independent Kurdistan

Kurdishaspect.com - By Peter Stitt

I disagree so vehemently with Julia Pettengill's view that an independent Kurdish nation is impossible right now due to the fact that it would destabilise the region.  She argues that Britain and American should pour in support (supposedly economic) to maintain South Kurdistan as part of a Federal Iraq.

I think her recipe leads to a continued support of the corruption within the KRG by the Western powers and does little for the Kurdish people.  She is advocating supporting the status quo because it suits America and Britain to do so.  They do not want any embarrassing situations with Turkey, Syria and Iran (those well known truly democratic countries).

I have an alternative vision.  The West should post military personnel and suitable weaponry within the borders of South Kurdistan and a Kurdish politician should bring forward a bill in the Hewler Parliament calling for a referendum on independence.  Those Western powers (believing in self-determination and the will of the people and democracy as they say they do) should then support the will of the Southern Kurdish people following the vote (we all know what the result will be) and then fully support the establishment and acceptance of that state in every way, including militarily.  They have done it for little old Kosovo so why not for Southern Kurdistan?

If the Western powers do not do this for fear of "creating instability in the region" as Julia Pettengill states, then they are appeasing dictatorships:  the Turkish military dictatorship, the Syrian Asad dictatorship and the theocratic dictorship of the mad Islamists of Iran.

Julia Pettengill's article states what is good for the US (which coincidentally suits the Talabani and Barzani families) but is not what is necessarily good for Kurdistan and, most importantly, the people of Kurdistan in the future.  Beware those Americans, even their journalists, they speak with forked tongues!

I long for the day when I walk in a free Kurdish homeland.  Then my life will be complete.

Biji Kurdistan u hami Kurd,
